I'm sorry FOR NISHA

A NOTE I SHOULD HAVE WRITTEN SOONER

Nisha,You deserved my attention. Not half of it.

You were trying to tell me something important. I kept looking at my phone, then brushed it off when you said it hurt. I want to own that, without finding a nicer name for it.

A few things I need to own
Not a perfect sentence. An honest beginning.
01 / THE PART THAT IS MINE

Let me say it
without an excuse.

Open these in your own time.

01What I got wrong.

You asked for ten minutes of my attention. I treated that as something I could fit around my screen. Being in the same room was not the same as being present.

02What you told me.

You said it made you feel as though your words did not matter. I brushed that aside too. Instead of listening to what hurt, I made you explain why it should matter.

03What I want to do differently.

When we sit down to talk, I want to put my phone away and listen without interrupting. That is something for me to follow through on, not something this page can prove.

02 / AN HONEST LETTER

No excuses. Just what I need to say.

No need to find an answer before you open it.

A NOTE FROM Deepak

Nisha,

You asked me for ten uninterrupted minutes. I gave you distracted replies and kept reaching for my phone. When you told me you felt ignored, I brushed it off. I am sorry for both things: not listening, and then making it harder for you to tell me that it hurt.

I do not want to explain this away by saying I was busy or that I did not mean it like that. Whatever else was on my mind, you were right there, asking to be heard. I could have put the screen down. I did not.

The change I want to make is small enough to say clearly: when we sit down to talk, my phone goes away, and I listen without interrupting. You should not have to keep asking for that attention. Saying it here is only a starting point; following through is my part.

You do not need to make this easier for me with a quick reply or a reassuring smile. If you need some time, I will leave that space. I wanted you to hear a proper apology, with no “but” waiting at the end of it.

I am sorry. I want my actions to say it properly, too.
Deepak

03 / A LITTLE ROOM

There is no deadline on how you feel.

I am sorry. I want my actions to say it properly, too.

Deepak
